#wesktop vs Electron
Electron bundles a full Chromium browser and a Node.js runtime into every application. wesktop uses the OS-native webview (WebKit on Linux/macOS, Edge WebView2 on Windows) and a Python backend served by granian, a Rust-based ASGI server. The architectural difference drives most of the tradeoffs below.

#Where Electron is stronger
Massive ecosystem. Electron has thousands of plugins, a large community, and extensive documentation. Most frontend libraries work out of the box because the renderer IS Chrome. The npm ecosystem provides ready-made solutions for auto-updating, crash reporting, code signing, and app store submission.
Battle-tested at scale. VS Code, Slack, Discord, Figma, and Notion all ship on Electron. It handles complex multi-window apps, GPU-accelerated rendering, and deep OS integration through years of production hardening.
Chrome DevTools built-in. Every Electron app ships with the full Chrome DevTools suite -- profiler, network inspector, memory analysis, accessibility auditor. Debugging is first-class.
Consistent rendering. Because Electron bundles Chromium, the rendering engine is identical across platforms. No cross-browser webview quirks.
Full browser API surface. WebRTC, WebGL, Web Audio, Service Workers, IndexedDB -- every Chrome API is available. Native webviews may lag behind on newer web standards.
#Where wesktop is stronger
Python backend. Your application logic, data processing, ML models, and system scripting all run in Python natively. No need to bridge between a Node.js backend and Python services via subprocess calls, REST APIs, or language-specific RPC protocols.
Tiny footprint. No bundled browser means a ~5 MB package instead of 100--200 MB. Installation is pip install wesktop, not a multi-hundred-megabyte download.
Fast startup. granian starts in milliseconds. Native webviews initialize faster than Chromium. Users see the window almost immediately.
Native webview. The webview is the same engine the OS uses everywhere else. It gets security updates from the OS vendor, respects system-wide proxy and certificate settings, and does not duplicate the browser the user already has installed.
Simpler architecture. One Python process runs the server. The native webview connects to http://127.0.0.1:<port>. No IPC protocol, no main/renderer split, no preload scripts. If you can write a Flask or FastAPI app, you can write a wesktop app.
Server-side rendering. The ASGI router (via fastware) handles all rendering server-side. You can also build fully dynamic UIs with the SDUI system -- 39 node types covering layout, display, data, input, feedback, and overlay.
#When to choose which
Choose Electron if you need Chrome-specific APIs (WebRTC, advanced WebGL, Service Workers), are building on an existing Node.js/TypeScript stack with npm dependencies, or need the mature packaging ecosystem (electron-builder, electron-forge) for app store distribution on all 3 major platforms.
Choose wesktop if your backend is Python, you want minimal resource usage, you prefer a simple architecture, or you are building internal tools, dashboards, or data-heavy applications where Python's ecosystem (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, etc.) is the real value.
